Greybody factor from black holes (For BS and MS student level)

Saturday 20th - Sunday 21st November 2021 (Online by Zoom)

One of the important predictions for Einstein’s General Relativity is the existence of the mystery dense object known as the black holes, with the successful experiments in the past five years, which open a new age so-called the black hole astronomy that inspires the researcher all over the worlds to involve in the relative studies.

The general knowledge believed that the black holes are super heavy objects with strong gravity, which attracted and grab everything around them, even the light is not able to escape. This is why we say a black hole is black. It is however that if we consider the quantum effects, the pair-production around the event horizon (which shall be the black boundary in the observations), one of the paired particles includes some possibility to radiate and escape the black hole, which is known as the Hawking radiation. The “possibility” shall be the target we will study in this school – the Greybody factor. Since it is a quantum effect, this kind of radiation is hard to observe for the black hole exists on the cosmological scale, but include some chance to observe in the extra high energy particle experiments. Nevertheless, the particle collision experiments have not yet reached this energy level but still possible to confirm in the future.

As such, to have a full introduction to the greybody factor, the schedule be organized as follow. We start with the introduction of General Relativity and the corresponding black hole solutions to have a rough idea about why the black hole shall exist through the theoretical physics analysis. Since the “probability” problem is related to the transmission and absorption problem in the Schrodinger-like potentials in quantum mechanics, which shall be the second subject. Next, we introduce the wave propagating around a black hole, which shall be the extension of the previous two subjects and is known as the black hole perturbation theory. In this section, one shall obtain the master equations for the greybody factor. For the second day program, we illustrated various methods to find the grey body factors and finally introduce how the grey body contributes to the study of Hawking radiation.
